For anyone who thinks traditional furniture doesn’t belong in a contemporary house, think again. The sculptural silhouettes of these period pieces look clean and modern against the stark lines and dramatic scale of the room. Brava to the design integrity and taste of this Dallas hostess who generously opened her home to us last week (and let me take pictures). Interesting bit of trivia: The house was built in 1929 by Stanley Marcus, late president of Nieman Marcus founded by his father and aunt. This room was a 1970s addition by a later owner, I think (?)…

What a pretty table—and room!—set by my darlin’ talented friend a few weeks ago, with a lovely foraged centerpiece and her pretty silver and linen. The four candles create extra sparkle, too. Use your pretty things every day! That’s what they’re for, to create beauty, pleasure, and a sense of occasion, even when it’s just a few friends for dinner.

An unfinished (and suckly) version of this was on my easel when I returned to the studio today, and i just said sod it and painted big shapes and colors and values and that was that. 20-30 minutes. It isn’t correct, or a finished piece or anything Id frame, but it was a reminder of an important lesson: simplify, squint, and go for it. .

Leaving CO this morning… The sunrise looks like #fireonthemountain ! I did not paint well this week but learned some good lessons – one of which is there is no substitute for practice. Havjng a good eye, some drawing skill, etc are all fine, but mixing and putting on the paint takes doing it and doing it and doing it …. It’s a goal for the future, and meanwhile something is better than nothing. But for NOW, we’ve got a book to put out there! #californiacokkingandsouthernstyle is featured on @theglampad ‘s blog! Wowie zowie am so thrilled and grateful! More on that soon!
